Getting Around North Carolina – Car, Bus and Train

Category: Get There and Around

North Carolina is a wonderful state to explore, but getting around requires a little planning. With beautiful mountain regions, lively cities, and a long Atlantic coastline, distances can be greater than you might expect.

My recommendation is to choose your transportation based on where you’re planning to go. A rental car offers the most flexibility, but buses, trains, and local transportation can also be useful.

Exploring North Carolina by Car

If you want to discover the Blue Ridge Mountains, visit smaller towns, or spend time along the Outer Banks, renting a car is usually the most convenient option.

Major highways connect Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, and other cities, making longer journeys relatively straightforward.

However, mountain roads can be winding, and some coastal destinations require longer drives than they might appear to on a map.

I recommend allowing extra time for scenic stops, particularly if you’re exploring western North Carolina.

Traveling by Train

Amtrak provides passenger rail services connecting several North Carolina cities.

The Piedmont and Carolinian services connect Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham, and Raleigh, making train travel an interesting alternative if you’re visiting these destinations.

You can also travel to North Carolina by train from cities outside the state.

Check Amtrak’s website for routes, departure times, and ticket information before planning your journey.

Buses and Local Transportation

Intercity bus services connect several major destinations, although routes and departure frequencies vary.

Within larger cities, you’ll find local bus networks. Charlotte also has a light rail system, which can be particularly useful when exploring parts of the city without a car.

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are available in many urban areas.

My Advice for Visitors

If you’re planning a city break, you may be able to manage without renting a car, especially if you choose accommodation close to public transportation.

For a longer vacation combining mountains, cities, and beaches, I would definitely consider a rental car.

It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover places you might otherwise miss.
