Discover the Blue Ridge Parkway – North Carolina’s Most Scenic Drive

Category: Things to Do

If there’s one road trip I’d recommend adding to your North Carolina itinerary, it’s the Blue Ridge Parkway. This spectacular mountain road offers breathtaking views, peaceful forests, hiking trails, and countless opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.

The parkway stretches for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina, connecting Shenandoah National Park with Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

You don’t need to drive the entire route to enjoy it. Even a few hours along the North Carolina section can become one of the highlights of your vacation.

Where to Stop Along the Way

One of my favorite recommendations is the Linn Cove Viaduct near Grandfather Mountain. This remarkable stretch of road curves around the mountainside and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Another wonderful stop is Craggy Gardens, near Asheville. Its hiking trails and mountain overlooks make it a fantastic place to enjoy the scenery.

If you enjoy waterfalls, consider visiting Linville Falls, where several trails lead to beautiful viewpoints.

When Should You Visit?

The Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful throughout the year, but autumn is particularly popular when the forests display their brilliant fall colors.

Spring and summer are also wonderful for hiking, wildflowers, and enjoying the mountain air.

Winter can bring snow, ice, and temporary road closures, especially at higher elevations.

My Tips for Your Road Trip

Take your time! The parkway is designed for scenic driving rather than getting from one place to another quickly.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, water, and a camera. There are plenty of overlooks where you’ll want to stop.

Before setting off, check the National Park Service website for current road conditions and closures.

Most importantly, leave some room in your schedule for unexpected discoveries. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you simply pull over and enjoy the view.
