There’s something special about visiting a lighthouse. Perhaps it’s the fascinating maritime history, the dramatic coastal scenery, or simply the feeling of standing beside a landmark that has guided sailors for generations.
North Carolina’s coastline is home to several remarkable lighthouses, and I definitely recommend visiting at least one during your coastal adventure.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is probably the most famous lighthouse in North Carolina.
With its distinctive black-and-white spiral pattern, this historic landmark is one of the most recognizable sights on the Outer Banks.
Standing approximately 198 feet tall, it is the tallest traditional brick lighthouse in the United States.
The surrounding Cape Hatteras National Seashore is also worth exploring, with beautiful beaches and fascinating maritime history.
Bodie Island Lighthouse
Just south of Nags Head, you’ll find the beautiful Bodie Island Lighthouse.
Its striking black-and-white horizontal stripes make it a wonderful subject for photography.
I recommend taking some time to explore the surrounding marshlands, where you can enjoy peaceful scenery and watch for coastal wildlife.
Currituck Beach and Cape Lookout
The red-brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla is another fascinating stop, particularly if you’re exploring the northern Outer Banks.
Farther south, Cape Lookout Lighthouse is famous for its distinctive black-and-white diamond pattern.
Reaching Cape Lookout requires a boat trip, making the visit an adventure in itself.
Plan Your Lighthouse Adventure
If you enjoy photography, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is particularly beautiful.
Some lighthouses offer seasonal climbing opportunities, while others may be closed for restoration or maintenance.
Check current opening hours and access information before your visit, especially if climbing to the top is part of your plans.
