If you love fresh seafood, North Carolina’s coast is a wonderful place to explore. From casual waterfront restaurants to traditional seafood markets, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the flavors of the Atlantic.
One of my favorite ways to experience a coastal destination is to find a small local restaurant, order something freshly prepared, and enjoy a relaxed meal with a view of the water.
North Carolina offers plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.
Fresh Seafood from the Atlantic
Shrimp, oysters, blue crab, flounder, and other locally caught seafood are important parts of North Carolina’s coastal food culture.
Calabash-style seafood is particularly famous. Originating in the small fishing town of Calabash, this traditional cooking style features lightly battered, fried seafood, often served with hush puppies, coleslaw, and French fries.
If you’re visiting the southern coast, I recommend trying it at least once.
Where to Enjoy Coastal Dining
Wilmington and nearby Wrightsville Beach offer a wide variety of seafood restaurants, from casual fish houses to more upscale waterfront dining.
The Outer Banks is another excellent destination. Towns such as Nags Head, Manteo, and Hatteras have restaurants where seafood is a central part of the menu.
If you’re exploring the Crystal Coast, consider stopping in Beaufort or Morehead City for a relaxed meal overlooking the harbor.
Try Something Local
For a traditional coastal experience, order a seafood platter with shrimp, fish, and hush puppies.
If you prefer something lighter, look for grilled local fish or freshly prepared crab dishes.
Oysters are another regional favorite, particularly during the cooler months.
My Tips for Seafood Lovers
Ask your server what’s locally caught and in season. Menus can change depending on the weather, fishing conditions, and availability.
During the busy summer season, popular waterfront restaurants can fill up quickly, so consider arriving early or making a reservation.
And don’t forget to leave time for a leisurely meal. Fresh seafood, a coastal breeze, and a beautiful waterfront view are all part of the North Carolina experience.
